There were undoubtedly safer ways to photograph the road ahead with a smartphone from the seat of my bicycle, one-handed, free-wheeling downhill in North London – nonetheless the risk was assessed and the moment captured. The road was clear, the sky immense, the wind encouraging, the light extraordinary – rendering this particular route à bicyclette entirely captivating.
The road ahead is not always visible. Obstacles litter the way; shadows crowd our line of sight; barriers bar our progress. All the more reason to seize the rare moments when blinkers are off, and eyes can stretch as far as the horizon without distraction. It reminds us it’s possible to look ahead and see clearly.
